A Retrospective

by Stephen JONES

They say time flies and in my case it certainly has. I have worked at Hineno Senior High School on one year contracts for over seventeen years, and yet it seems like only yesterday when I first started working here. Unlike my salary, which has never changed, there have been many changes to my work environment.

When I first started working here the CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) system in the LL room was already a little out of date, and due to staff transfers nobody knew how to use it. There wasn’t an English manual for me to use, but through trial and error I taught myself how to operate it. I could monitor each student reading from the textbook. When a student made an error I would give them advice through my microphone. Quite often a student would be startled on hearing my voice inside their headphones. They would look around and ask who was talking to them. Sometimes they even wondered if it was an imaginary voice inside their head! Nowadays I prefer the simpler face-to-face approach when talking with my students. It’s less confusing, and they don’t think they are talking with god.

The biggest change to how I teach is through the use of ICT. In today’s English lessons, instead of using a blackboard, VCR, tape cassettes, and posters, I use an interactive whiteboard, a laptop, video downloads, audio files, and PowerPoint presentations. With a laptop and projector I can use e-books and i-tools which are powerful tools for teaching students, and I have already noticed positive changes in student motivation and participation as a result.

The renamed Presentation Room will soon be fully Wi-Fi enabled and I will be able to access even more interesting teaching material that will increase their awareness of the global world in which they belong. Because I can do this from anywhere in the room it will also increase student-teacher interaction.

There have been many other changes, but one thing hasn’t changed, and that is the pleasure of working with the staff and students of this school, both past and present, and I hope that I can continue to do so for many more years to come.Retrospective
