08 Do You Like Turkey

221 words

Aki and Taro are members of a high school English club. Aki is a 3rd grade student. She just got back from a trip to England. Taro is in the 2nd grade.

Taro: Have you ever eaten turkey, Aki?

Aki: Yeah, I had it while I was studying in America. My host mother cooked it on Christmas Day.

Taro: Really? How was it?

Aki: It was really good. It tasted like chicken. We had it with gravy and mashed potatoes.

Taro: Gravy? What's that?

Aki: Gravy is a thick, brown sauce made from the juices of cooked meat. It has a salty taste.

Taro: Gravy makes turkey meat better, right?

Aki: That's right. It *goes well with turkey meat. As a matter of fact, it was so delicious that I asked my host mother to teach me how to make it.

Taro: Hmm ... You're so adventurous in trying new foods. I'm not sure I can do the same in a foreign country.

Aki: Aren't you going to study abroad this year?

Taro: Yeah, I'm going to Canada. I'm getting a little bit nervous about it.

Aki: But your English is great!

Taro: I'm worried about my host father. He's a turkey farmer. I'm afraid I'll have to eat turkey with my host family!

Aki: Oh, don't worry, Taro. I'm sure you'll like it! Trying new foods is a great way to learn about different cultures.
