13 Tiny Climbers

195 words

Two young climbers, eight-year-old Yuto and six-year-old Takuto, have recently conquered all 100 of the famous summits of Japan (Nihon Hyaku-meizan). It took them nearly two-and-a-half years to do it under the leadership of their grandfather Kaoru, 63 years old.

In the summer of 2007, Yuto, Takuto and their grandfather climbed Mt. Shirane in Nikko. This was their first ascent together. After that, they climbed 28 mountains in 2007 and another 43 in 2008. The brothers spent their summer vacation in 2009 climbing with their grandfather. It was during this time that they climbed Mt. Fuji, the tallest peak in Japan. In the fall of 2009, they accomplished their goal when they conquered Mt. Kitadake, the second highest mountain in Japan.

The two brothers follow a strict rule while climbing: the older brother Yuto leads the group up the mountain while the younger brother Takuto takes over on the way down. Though the brothers are happy that they achieved their goal, they also admit that they want to do other things such as visiting Disneyland. Kaoru says that he enjoyed climbing with his grandsons and is looking forward to climbing other mountains together with them.
