Subject: Superstition Question

Hi, Naomi,

Thanks for your last email. It was great to hear about your Golden Week trip.

I have a question about superstitions in Japan. I went to a Japanese restaurant yesterday and I stuck my chopsticks in a bowl of rice. My friend told me that this is bad luck in Japan. Is this true?

Looking forward to your reply,

George

Hi, George,

Yes, it’s true. Putting your chopsticks in rice like that is very bad luck. People only do this at funerals. Also, it’s bad to pass food from your chopsticks to another person’s chopsticks. But you’re not in Japan, so don’t worry too much about these customs.

Do you know any Canadian superstitions?

Best regards,

Naomi

Thanks for the information! I’ll certainly be careful about that in the future.

Here in Canada we have a number of superstitions. People say that it is very bad luck to open an umbrella if you are inside a building. I’m not sure I believe in superstitions, but I never open an umbrella inside my house. I also learned that we should never walk under a ladder. Some people say that it will bring seven years of bad luck!

Talk to you soon,

George
