Everything in Brisbane was new to me and my stay there gave me a lot of inspiration. I learned numerous things, including different lifestyles, diverse sense of value, various ways of life, and the hugeness of the world. They will all have great significance in my life, but by far the most impressive thing was "people". I found how wonderful people in Brisbane were mainly by interacting with students in Holland Park. Though there are countless good points, I think the following three things are especially important and will enrich our lives.
- Cheerfulness
The first surprising thing in Brisbane was people's vitality. I found lots of people were both physically and mentally cheerful. I think that is because there are many places they can exercise such as parks with equipment for exercise and long running courses. My host mother was 76, but she still had much energy and sometimes worked out in a gym or walked along the river. Even though she had pain in her back, her spirit was so strong. I found Holland Park School was filled with much energy as well. Through communicating with those people, I became more energetic correspondingly. Cheerfulness is one of the most important things to live happily with others.
2. Confidence
I think people in Brisbane have more confidence in themselves than the Japanese. By being confident, they seem to like themselves more and live their lives as they are. I found the tendency most strongly at Holland Park. It is a very multicultural school and students' hometowns, mother tongues, and appearance were very diverse. But they looked like they were all confident in themselves, stayed the way they were, and also respected one another. They treated everyone equally including themselves. I believe confidence will allow us to show what we really are, which will bring more diversity to our lives.
3. Initiative
This was one of the most surprising things I found at Holland Park. Students were so active all the time! For example, everyday classes were like conversations between a teacher and students. When a teacher asked a question, they immediately answered them. I found the relationship between teachers and students was closer than in Japan because they were actively engaged in classes. And it seemed to make it easier for students to ask questions. Another thing that shows the students' initiative was the project for promoting LGBTQ. I attended the meeting and was surprised very much. Some students gathered during lunchtime and discussed how to get LGBTQ more familiar with students. They were going to bake cookies to raise funds for more promotions. I thought it was amazing. I believe people like them will lead the world and make a difference.
Through talking with people and experiencing new things a lot, I was able to learn those very important things in my life. From the beginning to the end, my time in Brisbane was full of excitement and was one of the best memories of my life. I think I could accomplish my goals of being active in learning and challenging new things, and of course, I could enjoy my stay there to the fullest every day! I am so happy to have had such a great time. I thank everyone involved with this project, and I will tell as many things I learned in Australia as possible to other students.
