Day 3 Wednesday 5/3

Today was also full of fun, nature, and the energy of people around me.

I woke up at 6 am thanks to the footsteps of Lotti, a lovely dog in my host family's house. After preparing a little for today's presentation, we enjoyed having brekky: cornflakes with strawberries and yogurt, hot cross buns (Aussie traditional bread eaten at Easter), and milk. Our host family is so good at cooking, and we love her Aussie meals.

In the first period, we had another Japanese culture lesson. There were more students today than yesterday, which made us a bit worried, but they were so enthusiastic that we could teach the class smoothly and attract them into the class. They were much more energetic than we had expected, so we were very surprised and couldn't help but laugh for fun. We might have enjoyed the class more than the students. It was hard to choose the most cheerful student for a special food sample prize, but overall, the class went much better compared to yesterday's because we had talked about the areas to improve, practiced a lot last night, and what was more, the students were kindly engaged in joining the class actively. I think we successfully conveyed them the fascinations of our Japanese culture!

In period 3, I took a biology class. Holland Park students were allocated one student's assignment about his/her experiment, they checked it, and then wrote feedback to it. Allocation was completely random and students didn't know whose assignment it was, which I found kind of new to advise other students anonymously.

Aside from the presentation and the biology class, we mainly enjoyed playing sports throughout the day: volleyball and handball.

Volleyball is a sport with Aussie spirit, so the school has a court only for volleyball. We played it during period 2 (PE class) and period 4 (Senior Sport), having so much fun with our buddies and their friends. I think we were able to make friends with more Holland Park students by playing volleyball.

We played handball during the lunchtime (1pm - 1:50pm). It was completely different from the Japanese handball we'd played in Tennoji PE classes. Aussie handball uses only a small ball about the size of a baseball, and four players have to take turns hitting it in their own court and the other's court, using their hands like rackets. It just needs a ball and a small space, so I wanted to bring it back to Japan and play it with my friends at Tennoji High School.

As Holland Park State High School doesn't have club activities, students have to go home right after school. After returning home, I enjoyed talking with a host family member about her trip to Japan, her job as an entomologist, and some cultural differences between Australia and Japan. She has been to many countries, including Japan, many European countries, Africa, and Papua New Guinea, and her stories in those countries were fascinating. She is an entomologist, so her photos were mostly of plants and bugs. When I asked her the best place to travel in the world, she immediately answered, "Africa. You can experience a completely different life there, and it can have a great influence on your life. Everyone should go there." I had never thought of traveling to Africa before, so her story was eye-opening and very interesting.

I want to keep talking with as many people as possible and trying new things so I can broaden my perspectives.

今日も、楽しさ、自然、人々のエネルギーに満ちた1日でした。

ホストファミリーの家にいるかわいい犬、ロッティの足音のおかげで朝6時に目が覚めました。今日のプレゼンテーションの準備を少しした後、イチゴとヨーグルトを添えたコーンフレークに、ホット・クロス・バン（イースターに食べるオーストラリアの伝統的なパン）、そして牛乳を朝食に楽しみました。私たちのホストファミリーは料理がとても上手で、彼女のオーストラリア料理が大好きです。

1時間目には、また日本文化の授業をしました。今日は昨日よりも生徒数が多く、みんな少し心配していましたが、とても熱心な生徒たちだったので、スムーズに授業を進めることができ、生徒たちを授業に引き込むことができました。予想以上に元気な生徒たちだったので、私たちはとても驚き、楽しくて思わず笑ってしまいました。生徒たちよりも私たちの方が授業を楽しんでいたかもしれないです。特別な食品サンプルの景品をもらえる1番元気だった生徒を選ぶのは難しかったですが、全体を通して今日は昨日よりずっと良い授業をすることができたと思います。前日の夜にみんなで改善点を話し合い、たくさん練習し、そして何より生徒たちが親切にも積極的に授業に参加してくれたからだと思います。日本文化の魅力をよく伝えることができたと思います。

3時限目には、生物の授業を受けました。ホーランドパークの生徒たちは、1人の生徒の実験についての課題が割り当てられ、それをチェックし、それに対するフィードバックを書いていました。割り振りは完全にランダムで、生徒は誰の課題かわかりません。匿名で他の生徒にアドバイスするのは、少し新鮮に感じました。

プレゼンテーションと生物の授業以外では、主にスポーツ(バレーボール、ハンドボール)を一日中楽しみました。

バレーボールはオーストラリアのスピリットのあるスポーツなので、学校にはバレーボール専用のコートがあります。 私たちは2時間目（体育の授業）と4時間目（シニアスポーツ）にバレーボールをし、仲間やその友達ととても楽しみました。 バレーボールをすることで、もっと多くのホーランドパークの生徒と友達になれたと思います。

昼休み（13時～13時50分）にはハンドボールをしました。 天王寺高校の体育の授業でした日本のハンドボールとは全く違いました。オーストラリアのハンドボールは、野球ボールくらいの小さなボールを使い、4人の選手がラケットのように手を使いながら、自分のコートと相手のコートに交互にボールを打ちます。ボールと小さなスペースがあればできる競技なので、日本に持ち帰って天王寺高校でもやってみたいです。

ホーランド・パーク州立高校には部活動がないため、生徒たちは放課後すぐに帰宅しなければいけません。帰宅後はホストファミリーの1人と、日本へ旅行した話や彼女の昆虫学者としての仕事、オーストラリアと日本の文化の違いなどについて楽しく話をしました。彼女は日本をはじめ、多くのヨーロッパ諸国、アフリカ、パプアニューギニアなど多くの国に行ったことがあり、それらの国での話はとても魅力的でした。彼女は昆虫学者なので、彼女の写真はほとんどが植物と虫の写真でした。世界で一番良いと思う旅行場所を尋ねると、彼女はすぐに、「アフリカ。そこではまったく違う生活を体験できて、人生に大きな影響を与えてくれる。みんな行くべきよ」と答えてくれました。私はそれまでアフリカに旅行しようと思ったことがなかったので、彼女の話は目からウロコでとても興味深かったです。

これからもできるだけ多くの人と話をして、新しいことに挑戦して視野を広げていきたいです。
