Sunday 9th March
Today was another day of continuous rain due to the cyclone. However, we had a very enjoyable day.
After lunch, we went shopping with our host families. The shopping mall we went to was much bigger than the one in Japan and had many stores. My host mother told us about popular stores and characters in Australia, and we were able to buy some souvenirs such as magnets. I was also able to buy a local Starbucks cup, which my buddy had recommended to me beforehand. What I felt was different from shopping malls in Japan was the path in front of the stores. Whereas in Japan, there were only chairs to take a break, in Australia, there were several small stores in the middle of the street, selling phone cases and other items.
After returning home, my host mother taught me how to make Anzac cookies. Anzac cookies are traditional Australian cookies that were made and given by the wife to her husband who was away at war. Most cookies use eggs, but our host mother told us that one of the characteristics of Anzac cookies is that they do not use eggs. The Anzac cookies we made ourselves were very delicious.
After that, we cooked dinner with our host mother and homestay buddy. Our host mother is a good cook, so she taught us how to cut vegetables well.
In the evening, we enjoyed a video call with the other students in the Australia Study Program. It was very fun to see each other after a long time, talk face to face, and take pictures. I am looking forward to going to school tomorrow and seeing everyone for the first time in a while!
